There are many ways that could POTENTIALLY improve the service provided in many communities. It is up to someone to recognize a grand opportunity to do so in the place's they know. A few years ago (10 or so), in my home town we replaced our BLS ambulance that was based in the fire department with a QRS unit. At the time when this happened there was only 3 or 4 EMT's to staff the ambulance. The end result with switching to QRS was, more people getting medical training (most of the department personal) and improved responce times. After a few years, everyone involved felt that the level of care being provided had improved even though we were no longer providing transportation. The bulk of personel liked the fact that they could respond and offer medical care, while only committing 20 minutes or so, as apposed to 2 hours of their time.

Scott,
The same reason why Canton Fire Dept. went to a QRS (we'll as we know there was a few other reasons that dont need to be brought up) But the majority was we dont want to transport,"some of us like to though" it's nice to go and provide a level of medical care via our first responders and EMT's that would rather not transport and like you say just commit 20minutes or so instead of the two hours.

I think that QRS is a huge benefit when used appropriately, more departments should look at it for use under the right circumstance. It's a great Public Relations move and it may help slower departments keep membership active with more calls, spark a little interest.

I have to agree with you douglas and Kim.. I know that our dept cant make each and every QRS call, but at least 85% someone is responding.. I know the elderly personnel and people out in scanner land hear us go out all the time when we are dispatched. I know if I ever needed EMS for whatever reason and the BLS/ALS was out it would be good to know that QRS was dispatched and hopefully are reponding...
