Maybe I am going out on a limb here but, Which would you rather have protecting your community? #1 - A well equiped fire department with the latest in technology (the best money can buy), state of the art pumpers and gear with firefighters who have little to no training?? OR #2 - A fire department with well used, hand me down equipment that has well trained and skilled personel that have received the best training money can buy?? The fire service is like a relationship, its not how good the material things are, its how well you make it work!! ;D

I want both, Best Equipment and the Best Personal. You just have to work on both issues at once. I think that is called MULTITASKING (or did you not learn that in MEDIC SCHOOL) ;D There lets see if that gets your PANTIES in a BUNCH

wish list? how about no more fatals? we lost too many young people to MVC's this year. How about better education for these youth. We need to find away to reach These kids!!!! Maybe it would help if we could find away to get them interested in fire, EMS,911 dispatching, or even law enforcement!!

Funny that you mention getting through to our young ones (Kim and I just had this same convo last week). My daughter is arranging the mock accident at Athens High School this year and she was telling me that they are not required to attend (they offer a study hall to replace and in the past the kids just don't go to school that day). Why is this??? In my opinion they should HAVE to attend and if they can't or don't want to go - make them write an essay on the subject.
This might sound a bit ambitious coming from someone who doesn't have a hell of a lot of time herself but here goes an idea.........many companies in the area have safety fairs for their employees why not do the same for the high schools?? Maybe a safety/career day. Vendors aren't probally a booth as the kids aren't going to buy anything but there are other things we could do. The more hands on you have the better - ya got to involve them somehow or they aren't going to really be interested. And then just maybe even aquire some future volunteers at the same time. I wouldn't know where to start but I sure would be willing to help.

I have to agree with educating our youth and making it stick. Too many school districts don't see the importance of this as we do. They just want the problem to go away, and they do that by not making them see the realization of what's going on . I say razzberries to the schools that are doing this. Roses to the fire companies that have a juniors program, I just wish there was more the juniors could do, other than serve coffee and attend social events, I believe there needs to be change in the way the state lets us do things.

Hey Firegirl Why don't we set up an accident fair or make a big disply someplace where it will draw attention. Get a couple of cars that had fatalities in them and put them on display. Collect all the pictures of the kids say between the ages of 16 and 20 who have died within the county the past 3 or 4 years. Maybe make a big map display and for each fatality put the picture there. We could use this for an awareness campaign. Get other FD/EMS/PD involved. I think we all agree that we are losing to many young peopleTEXT

Hey Kim, If things keep going the way they are in canton, you soon won't have a town left.

I don't know if anything will make it sink in. Obviously witnessing one of your friends being killed right in front of you doesn't do it. Because the next night the survivors just party again because "blank would have wanted it that way". And then they show up at the viewing drunk or stoned or whatever. Maybe showing them pictures of real bodies destroyed by MVA's (before they are cleaned up). In Health or Drivers Ed make them watch an autopsy (maybe a video?) and see for themselves what happens to the body organs and bones in a fatal. It needs to start with the adults, parents and educators, who sometimes have a bad habit of turning a blind eye.

Dupont1 - I am all for getting something together. I thought doing one thing at one location would be easier but the kids aren't going to voluntarily attend it - you need to take it to them - that means taking the program to each of the high schools. As others have said there are a lot of parents who turn the blind eye - "not my kid, he/she would never do that" ...the parents sure ain't going to make them go. The schools don't even make it mandatory to attend the mock accidents. I don't know how "gruesome" (for lack of a better word) to get with details but shock value probally is the way. How involved can we count on the schools to help us?? And if you throw in a few "other" activities having to do with what fire, ems, and police do some young person might say hey I think I could do that. In order to even try to get it to sink into a kid you need to think like one - you make attendance of the mock accidents, classes (like drivers ed - but to get the movies or what ever added to this class is a state thing) or whatever mandatory. If you want to try to peak their interest in one of the fields of emergency services you need to get some of it hands on - they like to try it out. And maybe throw in a contest or something to make it fun. Think back to how you were - did you do anything you didn't have to?? Then there is always peer presure - the friends aren't so they aren't going to either (even if they wanted to). Being the daughter of a firefighter I often got to go with my dad to exhibits and stuff and if there wasn't anything exciting in my eyes it was boring and I didn't go again. Think like a kid.
Do I think going through all of it is a worth while cause -YES!! Even if you save one life by doing it it was worth it. If we can get enough people together to pull this off I would be more than willing to help organize. I work a screwy shift so I am available during the weekdays. Its weird how passionate you become about something as your own kids grow up (the 2nd of three gets her permit this week). I hate when the tones drop for a mva and they should be on their way home - that sinking feeling is one I could pass on.
PS. Sue you are exactly right - living down the road from that house they still do it. I just want to stop and start female doging!!

Thanks all for the replies. I have headed up The mock Accidents in the valley school distric for years. Now it is time to find something new to get to the kids. At this point the schools here tell them it is going to happen and take all the shock value out of the program. When we first started the kids would be crying or shaken. Now it is a big joke to them.We are working on a new program. We are thinking of using power point or even a film of their peers and go directly to their drivers ed classes. Knock on wood!! We haven't had the young fatals here in a while. My heart goes out to my brothers and sisters in the Troy, Canton and Windom areas being hit so hard this year. It is hard to deal with. I hope the many GOOD ideas that I have read here, you'll put in place and you make it work for you. That is my big wish for all. Thanks again.
