My name is Brian Plume. I work for the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry. I started with the Bureau in 1993 as a seasonal Forest Patrolman. I was re-classified to a seasonal Forest Ranger in 1996. I then received a full-time appointment as a Ranger in 1997. In 2002 I was promoted to my current position of Forest Fire Specialist Supervisor. All of my employment with the Bureau has been in the Tioga Forest District #16 (Tioga and Bradford Counties).
I have been a volunteer fireman since 1988. I have held Lieutenant, captain and trustee positions with my department. I also ran with the ambulance service for a few year. Even though I don't run EMS anymore I am still a First Responder. Unfortunately with my family and work I am not really as active as I once was with the FD. I have participated in wildland fires in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming and of course Pennsylvania.
The Bureau of Forestry has legal responsibilities to suppress, prevent and investigate wildfires. This pretty much covers everything from putting the fire out (which is by far the easiest part of my job) to training firefighters to presenting Smokey / prevention activities to figuring out how and who started the fire to prosecution to recovering suppression costs and so on. So in other words the Bureau of Forestry has a big job. We couldn't do that without the cooperation of volunteer fire companies, volunteer fire wardens / crews, 911 centers and any other organization involved with wildfires.
I think this forum will be GREAT. A large part of my job is relaying information to fire companies and just plain trying to know what is going on with them all. That is much easier said than done considering I have to Counties to cover and with being fairly new in this job. I believe this will help greatly.
If I can be of any assistance with training, equipment, grants, federal excess equipment, etc. please by all means get in contact with me.
