New York State Police officials say there have been 8 fires in Van Etten since November. Five of them have been ruled arsons. State police say they believe the same person or people set all eight fires. They’re hoping tips from the community will help solve the case.
"We all put extra alarms in the house, that's all you can do,” said a Van Etten neighbor.
Some people who live in Van Etten are preparing, just in case a possible serial arsonist decides to strike again. Others have already fallen victim. Letty Koski of Van Etten says someone set her son's home and grandson's truck on fire.
"And we were hit too. We found a bottle with some kind of fluid and wick. And they had thrown it, but thank goodness there was a snow bank there or it would've set the barn on fire,” said Letty Koski, Van Etten.
New York State Police say since November there have been 8 fires in Van Etten. Five were ruled arsons. Three were labeled suspicious. Investigators believe all are connected.
State police say some of the buildings deliberately set on fire were sheds and barns. The most recent arson happened April 3rd, when state police say someone set a Spencer-Van Etten school bus on fire. People in Van Etten are thankful, no one was hurt in any of the fires.
" Well, they need to do something. What would've happened if kids were on that bus,” said Eva Andrews, Van Etten.
"I just wish they would find whoever is doing it. It's a scary thing,” said Koski.
"I think it's bad in some ways because we have no village police here. All we have is state and Chemung Sheriff's and whoever is doing this, maybe they know that,” said Carol Daniels, Van Etten.
There is a 12-hundred dollar reward for anyone who has information, which will help state police capture a suspected serial arsonist. If you have any information call (607) 739-8796.
