Fire fighter Manny Rivera assigned to engine co. # 3 "D" suffered a heart attack after affecting a rescue of a trapped resident from the second floor of a 2 1/2 story semi on Washington Street yesterday evening. After bring down an adult male resident from a ground ladder he sat down on the curb in front of the Battalion Chief. Manny had a blank stare about him and Pete asked him if he was alright, He then just fell over Manny then went into arrest at the scene. T.E.M.S. quickly administered C.P.R and transported him to St. Francis Medical Center 3 blocks away from the incident. Manny coded twice at the hospital and is in an induced coma on a respirator. His condition at this time is critical. God has his back.
I first met Manny at a second alarm fire a few houses away from his on Bridge St. about a year after I got promoted to Captain E-10 in 1989. He told me that he had taken the test and thought he did well. He did well and was assigned to Engine Co. # 2 which is about a 9 iron away from where he lives. I later transferred to E-2 and worked opposite Manny. He and his family were at the firehouse all the time and he knew all the goings on. When I got involved with fire investigations I would ask Manny to assist me with interviews with Spanish speaking individuals. He was a great help. Then in 2002 they closed Engine 2 and Manny was assigned to E-3 and I went to Staff at H.Q.
When engine 3 came to H.Q. would always talk about the good old days at E-2. Often at H.Q. Manny would address me as "Cap" which never bothered me but another Battalion Chief took issue with me. I told him that current titles are important but to Manny I was "Cap" for so Manny years and if many wants to call me "Cap" Then I am "Cap " to him. So to you Manny my brother "Cap" sends his prayers!

Update on Manny.
Manny remains in a coma, responds to stimuli's and still needs prayer.
On duty companies are maintaining a constant vigil in 2 hour shifts, and off duty members flood the hospital.
Anywhere, anyone, any-time: all who endeavor in this field are a fraternity. We must stand vigil emeritus.
Thanks my new brothers & sisters in Bradford.

Manny update: Manny has been off the ventilator for a couple of weeks and has emerged from his coma. He has been dealing with many complications i.e. infections and associated fevers. His road to recovery will be long and may result in his inability to continue his firefighting career. He more than likely will receive a disability pension. I wish to thank all my brothers and sisters in the Bradford County area for their prayers. If you wish to follow up on Manny's progress the link to T.F.D. website is: www.trentonfirefighters.com Just spoke to my bud still on the job (Property owner in Athens Twp. Ladder 1 driver "B" Platoon) and they just made a nice grab on an unattended 3 year old. The fire was going like hell in the basement of a 3 story semi and interior crews could not find interior egress to the basement. As crews were probing for the cellar steps Ladder 1 officer was sounding the floor in the kitchen area and his axe went through the floor forcing interior crews to withdraw. Egress was made via an exterior door in the rear and an interior attack ensued. By this time the fire had escalated to a second alarm and the initial Acting Battalion was relieved of command by Batt 4 (my replacement) and assumed side "C" operations. My bud was ventilating the rear and he noticed the A/BC enter the structure and emerge with the child. This was the kitchen area where Ladder 1 had just withdrew from. Wow and the kid is going to make it. There were no reports of entrapment leading up to the rescue. Man does that change tactics, what luck on our part someone of higher power was looking out for that kid! Apparently grandmaw was at the store getting some meds for the 3 year old at the time of the fire. The County prosecutor is charging her. Man do I miss the job!!!! Thanks, Batt4

I'm sorry I must correct Manny's status to still in a coma. I received poor intell from a source still on the job. My bad for relaying incorrect info.
I now know the other side of the media saga. Your are only as good as your sources.

It is with regrets that I announce the passing of Fire Fighter Manny Rivera. Manny succumbed last evening 3/31 around 22:30 hours. He will be missed here and welcomed to a greater brotherhood of fallen hero's.
Manny's L.O.D. death is the third I have had to deal with since my career began. He joins Bobby Mizapalko and Joey Woods who passed together on 8/4/86 while battling a fire in a windowless structure on Market St.
I'm sure there will be an article in the local papers tomorrow, you can read them both on line if you wish. TheTrentonian and The Trenton Times.
Thank you my brothers and sisters and continue to pray for Manny's loved ones.
Be safe my brothers and sisters, The Batt.
