I have heard of "release the plants" and have left my place of work when released. I think we need to draw the line here. I can not believe a fire dept. would call up to the high school or county and request their personal be released. This is crazy!!! School should be the most important "job" in a kids life. The rest of their lives depend on the education they receive. They have the rest of their lives to respond to calls.
Is this acceptable or am I just missing something?

Gary i am glad that you brought this up ! Here in my dept. we do have the plants released for our more serious fires due to manpower issues. How ever we DO NOT AND WILL NOT HAVE SCHOOLS RELEASED and we have no plans to ever do that. However there was a dept. that was accused of this and after further investagation was found out to be the students themselves using cell phones to have themselves excussed to fight fire.the students involved were put on fire dept. probation . I have also learned that this is no more in the school district involved as the fire chief has had it stopped by the school administration.

Agree, and to add... It should also be the responsibility of the chief to not ignore when a student shows up at a call during school hours. We don't want the admin and public to think the departments allow it.

Heck I can remember sitting in study hall in high school watching a working fire at the Towanda Middle School and couldn't even leave. School is the most important thing for today's youth, there will be plenty of time to catch some fire after an education is completed.

Shame on the Chief that condones this activity. Shame on the school that would allow this to happen.
Think about the LIABILITY here. We trust the schools to protect our children how would you feel if your child was released from this trust to engage in one of the most dangerous forms of public safety? My son is a junior and if I knew he was allowed to go to a fire scene from school: 1) the principal would be looking for another job 2) the Township would be notified by my attorney about the litigation I will pursue against them. 3) the Chief of his department would no longer be the chief of that department. 4) my son would no longer be a junior because he should know better.
Thats how strong I feel about the matter. They will get their jobs if they stick with the Fire Service. (PATIENCE young ones)

when i was in school you could carry your pager and sign yourself out if there was a call and you were 18.
