PA INFORMATIONAL ALERT: A Service of The Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute-Tom Savage, Executive Director
========================================================
It is with a deep sadness and a great sense of loss that I inform you that Wayne Curtis Weldon, Curt to us, has lost his bid for reelection and has conceded to his opponent Joe Sestak.
Many emergency responders, both Fire and EMS, Volunteer and Paid, worked hard to help Curt retain his position in Congress, and for that each of them should feel a sense of pride and satisfaction in knowing they did their best. If you were involved, a special thank you to you for all your hard work. If you were not, you may want to think hard and long about the consequences of your decision.
The loss of Curt in Washington is significant and will have a critical negative impact on Emergency Services across the United States. There is now a significant void in the leadership in Washington to advocate for America's Emergency Responders.
We will never forget the many, many accomplishments of Curt that have benefited Emergency Service First Responders across America. He never forgot who he was or where he came from; and he propelled Fire and EMS first responders to the forefront of national government. He is one man that can reflect without hesitation on the significant contributions he has made to his constituents and the American Fire Service.
I referred to Curt one time as the Ben Franklin of the modern Fire and EMS Service. He certainly will be remembered for his dedication and service to Fire and EMS first responders across America. He started the Congressional Fire Services Institute and helped establish State groups, such as The Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute here in Pennsylvania.
But there is another way we can show our gratitude to Curt for all he has done. We can follow in his leadership, for now is the time to hear his words "You must become Political, but not Partisan" He advocated our involvement in the political process. He wanted us to work together to educate the public and our elected officials on the issues and concerns of America's First Responders. He taught us how to do that and now it is up to us to move forward putting into practice what the master has taught us.
We must continue to support and grow both the Congressional Fire Services Institue and the Institutes at the State level. We must educate the service on the need to become political without becoming partisan. We owe it to Curt. We owe it to ourselves. We owe it to the organizations we serve and most importantly, we owe it to our communities we serve!
Curt Weldon...Thanks for all you have done over the many years, we love you Curt and appreciate your leadership...and Mary, thanks for sharing him with us.
