Lee Center Fire Department to be shut down
WKTV-2 NBC
Effective next Monday, October 1, the Lee Center Fire Department will close down; this coming from the Oneida County Legislator who serves that district.
The decision was made final Tuesday, September 25, following a meeting with the board who overseas the department and local law enforcement.
The dispute between the Lee Center Volunteer Fire Department, and the board of supervisors that oversees them has been on going for over a year.
The board feels the department is not following proper training guidelines, and the department feels that the board has a vendetta against their chief. Now, unexpectedly, the department says that a decision to close down their operation has come.
Members of the Lee Center Fire Department showed up for their monthly meeting expecting the doors to be closed and locked by their supervising board. This after rumors, within the public, swirling they were to be shut down effective this past Monday.
Shortly after the group met, their County Legislator, Pam Mandracyk showed up to tell them the news that, effective next Monday, the department will close down.
Mandracyk says that the decision to close comes after a meeting between state troopers, the Oneida County Sheriffs Department, and the Lee Center Board of Commissioners.
Mandracyk says at that meeting, a board representative asked local law enforcement to block access by the Lee Center Department after next Monday if they decide to show up and help on future calls. The Lee Center Chief says, despite the closure, the department will respond to calls, to assist, if asked with their own equipment.
Until a deal is in place with surrounding villages to cover lee center fires, the closure leaves more than 7000 people, in a 46 square mile radius without a department and more than 30 volunteers left at home
