Change in inevitable. Its going to happen, be it Presidents, Governors, Seasons, Commisioners, Supervisors or yes, Fire Chiefs.
We as CFO's come into our positions with a certain gameplan, tailored to our individual selves. We look at what is the best for our department, our constituants, and our politcal subdivisions. We try and marry our own beliefs with that of the aforementioned. In the end though, we think we have a common goal. Is part of our goal, thinking outside the box, life with out us; the current CFO. Are we putting our operations in the best possible position to be effective when life without us, be it voluntary or involuntary, ends? Are we listining to the voices of others, honoring their opinions, basing our opinions on the experiences of others?
We must all accept what will be coming. It happened before us, or we wouldn't be in the positions we are now. Accept and overcome. Adapt and improve. Listen and learn. Understand and implement.
These will be keys to our services being progressive and functionally sound for years to come. Do not become holier than thou, for in the end, you will become the follower instead of the leader.
Better yet, accept change, your Judas may be amongst you now.

Tim you keyed on a good point "listen and learn" In my opinion this is the most important aspect of any organization.
Too many times in my career I have had to deal with the individuals who listen with their mouthes and not their ears. For the most part they turn out to be the members that sell out their C.F.O's for thirty pieces of silver.
I'm all ears

Another thought on the topic: Change is the constant in our lives. Not to embrace this is a refusal to deal with our struggle to survive! Individually or collectively.
Deal with it brothers and sisters!
