This thought came to mind in light of the recent posting about why are we killing firefighters. I could ramble on about history and egos and not playing well together, as well as how different life was 30 years ago when we had 4 times the number of volunteers that we have now, but I would prefer to leave it at "Change is inevitable."

I believe it would dramatically help the effectiveness of the fire dept overall. Having everyone trained to a certain set level like FF1 would mean that anyone could essentially do any job on the fireground. It also looks good to Uncle Sam and the Commonwealth when your company is applying for Federal or State grants. But it would greatly hurt volunteerism. Its hard enough to get to an EMB class in our area, and now I hear it's going to 100 hours or more in the near future. Plus taking the extra time out to persue and challenge FF1. It may work for the younger guys like myself, but take someone who has 20 years experience and has the fundamentals of FF, a full time job, kids and a spouse to support , it is hard enough to take time out to volunteer let alone try to take all these additional classes. But either way I fell that down the road a few years this will be the reality of the volunteers.

I believe that it would help effectiveness 100 fold, while only hurting volunteerism slightly. Look around you, other states have requirements and still manage to put volunteers in the feild, the only people you will lose are the ones that are not devoted.
Many of these regulations would be saftey concerns, and only improve conditions for the volunteers themselves. Standardized minimum required training and improved saftey standards that are enforced, it is all needed.

First of all volunteerizm is down there is no doubt about that, but the days of freelancing is over !!! The days of 3/4 coats and booster lines are gone ! My opinion is if your not willing to at least train on a regular basis and have the minimum of Essentials, Resp 1, R and I awareness, Engine 1 ops, Rit or Fast team training you should really take up another hobbie. I don't mean to be harsh but thats the way it has to be. I recently had attended a workshop in which it was presented by The state fire commissioners office.... a very very moving seminar. We should of been doing the concept of this seminar 20 years ago. The jist of it all is the more frequent you train the sharper you become aware of your purpose or mission in the fire service. I recently read the one of many articles by Dr Harry Carter in Firehouse. com about ( Be all that you can be ) ...... and we shoud be !

First of all [glow=red,2,300]VOLUNTEERISM[/glow] (you spelled it wrong, there is no Z in Volunteerism) is down there is no doubt about that, but the days of freelancing is over !!! I recently read the one of many articles by Dr Harry Carter in Firehouse. com about ( Be all that you can be ) ...... and we shoud be ! You reguard firefighting as a Hobby? Hobby: Noun: Side line, spare time, diversion, recreation 'small_Old_World_falcon_formerly_trained_and_flown_at_small_birds', No booster lines? Do you pull a 2 1/2" line for a 10ft. x 10ft. grass fire? Actually this train of thought is only found in the United States. 'Booster' type hoses are used uniformly throughout much of Europe and most British countries. In these counties, they are far more advanced than the United States, and this method is a Universal Standard. Only they call it 'reel hose'. That's booster hose, it came off a reel.. on the truck. The whole side of it was reel hoses.
