Hey Scott I dont think that anyones become lazy at Rapid extrication. Questions to ask before could probally answer the question if Rapid Extrication should be used. 1. What life threatening issues are at hand ? would rapidly extricating the paitent help or hurt the patient? 2. Scene Safety.. What are the road conditions? Are the roads closed down? what is the weather? What hazards are present(fuel, live wires, chemicals, etc)? Personally though Scott I think that every incident requires a first hand look before the answer can be given. As long as we all keep doing what we are trained to do I dont think anyone will question it.

Well the point I was trying to make is that often times patients are rapidly extricated when it's just not warranted do to injuries or hazards. There are only a few reasons that we should do a rapid extrication:
1. airway compramize 2. SEVERE bleeding not controlled 3. unresponsive patient 4. scene becomes too dangerous, I don't consider most "road conditions" as an unsafe scene - this would be direct danger to fire or haz-mat stuff, etc 5. OR the patient you rapidly extricate is blocking a more severe patient like those listed above
If you all think about this, I'm willing to bet that nearly everyone has performed rapid extrication without this criterea having been met.

I will definately agree that it is done more often than should be I think it is more complacency than laziness. EMS personell in general are just plain complacent. If you dont believe that when is the last time you saw an ems worker put gloves on. Hmmm not on every scene as we are taught ya think? Complacency will bite every one of us in the but at least once.
