Not to sound like I know everything or knock how other people do things, but can someone tell me how a medic unit from Towanda can be "available" in at Arnot? Doesn't seem like it would do them a lot of good to respond on a call to Sullivan County or the Wyalusing/New Albany area from the Elmira area. Every company I have ever dealt with has had SOG's that say you can't go available until you are in your primary coverage area or even back at the station.

No, there not going to be able to take a call in Sullivan County or Southeastern part of Bradford when they are calling available from Arnot, but if there is a call in the Northern part of County or if Valley busy with 3rd or 4th due. The County Dispatcher would know that they are ready for immediate use.
If Greater Valley truck is calling available from Troy Hospital, they are not going be able to take a call in Tioga County, NY or Chemung, NY, but we know that they are available when left Troy and we know that once they arrive back in the Valley they don't need any equipment and their truck is ready for immediate use.
They should tell the dispatcher that they are available but returning to Towanda from Arnot.

BUt, once a unit calls available they are no longer tracked in CAD. With that being said we have no way of know there location. I have always wondered and asked---why not say "Returning location Arnot"
Then when you get into your RESPONSE area say available in response area.
If we see that they have only been returning for 5 minutes from RPH then we know that SHOULD be available to handle a call in Sayre, but now in SUllivan County.
TO many times we page a call first due to get told "Bradford we are in "blank" page it again second due.
NO BASHING HERE

You both have made good points, but i agree with Kim that you should wait til you get back in your area. If a Memorial unit was in the valley area and heard Greater Valley go 3rd or 4th due it wouldn't be hard for them to come up on the radio and say, "hey we're in the area would you like us to respond?" I dunno, just my opinion here NO BASHING...

Having once been a dispatcher and also working EMS, this is once agian a touchy subject.
1 - the dispatchers do not track units once they state they are available, regardless of where they are returning from.
2 - Units are available (most generally) to take calls once they clear the hospital.
My personal opinion is that the 911 center should not put a unit availble in CAD until they call in qaurters or available in coverage area.

This happens on a regular basis. It is not uncommon for one medic / micu unit to talk with another unit and stage ourselves to cover both districts. It is also not uncommon to have units MA other units when in need if the other service is available. A prime example of this would be Saturday night when I was working an arrest an MICU 102 was arriving at the RPH with a behavorial patient, 102 and my unit talked on a privacy freuency and had them turn around and run a 2nd due call in the valley. We all know at any point in the day where are other services/units are and the current work load, and if assistance is needed. It just relates back to good communication amoungst all involved.
