Can anyone explain why there is a need to have four or five people in the back of an ambulance. by the time you add the Pt it is standing room only, then try to fit a Medic in the back, and it looks like a clown car when they all get out at the hospital. how many providers is good? what states when enough is enough, my agency states two providers and an observer.

If you want to see people in teh rear of the ambulance go to watson town. Typical chest pain, three people (BLS providers) in rear, plus the medic, and the paramedic student when they arrive on scene. talk about a full load.

This is why my favorite phrase is "two people are getting out of this truck, and it won't be me". ;D Cletus, don't forget that if there are too many people, enough that it would interfere with patient care, throw someone out. You are responsible for that patient once you get in.

911 thank you for the wisdom. blue maby in six years you have not had this problem, but I see it almost daily, I like it when units are riding, you ask them to take a BP and they say I don't know how . Why is this person in the back couldn't he be better used to direct traffic.

cledus were you in the metropolis of Ridgebury recently. Sorry we sound like the shoe might fit here the other night I sat on the floor because ther was a medic and he brought maybe a student or someone , myself , a tech , and another tech. the reason I didnt get out is because one of the techs that showed hasnt been on a call in over 6 months so hell nooo I am not getting out so she can make one call that whole run was a freakin disaster right from the time I got in the passenger seat at 8 50 pm for a frequent flyer respiratory charlie response and the tech from the back reached up and turned on the damn siren. all tha way to the call.but anyway sorry needed to get that out but yes I agree that to many in the back is a pain in the but sorry for the medics we inconvenience I only hope I can make a difference.

I am not slaming an one dept. If it is a problem there must be a solution. it would have to start at the department them selfs. So how many is to many

I and Paramedic were dispatched to assist a BLS Squad. When we arrived on rendezvous with the other ambulance service, there were eight people on the truck "counting the patient." There was only three people seat belted ( the patient, driver and the front passenger). There should be only “two EMT” in the back of the truck, one to recheck vitals and other one to assist the paramedic. So if you want to ride to the hospital you can take your POV or hop in the Medic Unit.

EIGHT!?!?! Holy $#%!. Where the heck do you put eight people in an ambulance? They are making them smaller in the back every year!

Actually Chris V, that was me that night in R-town. The only problem I had with the call was when the patient's family chose to ride to the hospital, then 2 min later needed to use a rest room. Did you have the front seat re-upolstered yet? ;D Sorry, couldn't resist.

Blueeighty8,
That's, what we said!!! Nobody wanted to get out, when my partner got on aboard. But when you are standing you get more people in the back.

Chris V,
A solution of 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite, (household bleach), diluted between 1:10 and 1:100 with water, should clean the contaminated surfaces and let it air dry. That's what we used when we had someone go no. # 2 on a seat.

I also remember a day when eight people where in an ambulance. Let me tell you if they got into an accident we would have had a small MCI. There is no way that the patient can get the care they deserve when there is that many people in the ambulance. Lets face it I am all fore having lots of people to help and everyone wants to do the right thing for the patient but eight people, come on. I know everyone wants to ride in on the good calls but there will always be another person they can ride in with. Lets face it people are still driving drunk so it’s not like our business is going to dry up any time soon. No one likes to step on anyone’s toes and tell them to get out of the ambulance because a lot of times you don’t know what there qualifications are this also goes back to the ID tag discussion. The ambulance company alone should be responsible for making sure there are not a lot of people in the back so that when ALS shows up they can get in and have enough room to work and get things dune. Once the Medic arrives and deems the patient is ALS he or she is in charge and the patient is ultimately there responsibility. If the medic says get off then they should they can ride in with the Medics Tech they are going to the same place.
