Can anyone confirm or deny the rumor that our region declared Stat as the "preferred" aircraft of the Bradford/Susquehanna EMS region? If so, I'm curious what it really means. Does it actually mean that the region thinks field providers, EOC's, and hospitals should show a preference towards the service, or is it just a little pat on the back meant to thank Stat for being based in the region? I believe it's a legitimate question, as I'm pretty sure it's a DOH violation to show a bias to one organization for political reasons. In other words, you have to use the closest available aircraft, because it's in the best interest of the patient. Although Stat 15, when available, is the closest aircraft for a majority of the region, Lifeflight 3 and 4 are closer for a good sized chunk. It's no secret that the organizations are rivals, and certain folks have taken sides, but it shouldn't be on the shoulders of the field units, dispatchers, and hospital staff to take the liability of calling for a "preferred" service over the closest available.

Finally, a person who thinks out side the box and realizes that there are other aircraft resources available out side of Stat. Good job Pete.

i really hope this topic gets a good discussion. i think as dispatchers we should be able to choose which aircraft would be better for the patient. when u look at the areas in the southern part of the county, they would benefit having lifeflight 3 or 4. the northern parts would benefit with stat15, thats if they are avalible to fly. whats everyone else's opinion?

My opinion is that if I'm the patient, I want to go south, no matter what the problem. Call Life Flight, take me to GMC; I don't wanna go to RPH or CMC, for any reason whatsoever.
IMHO- If we call for a chopper and get LifeFlight it's either Available w/ an ETA or Not Available Due to XXReason; 13-15 Minute ETA.
I often hear from Stat dispatches: May be able to fly, will check back, get back to you in ten minutes, 35 Minute ETA... No, sorry, I want a no BS assessment, not a maybe. Can or Can't.
Protocol Says
When air ambulance transport is indicated,
[glow=yellow,2,300]EMS personnel must request an air ambulance through the local PSAP without requesting a specific air ambulance service.[/glow]
The incident command system, when in place, should be used to accomplish this request. The PSAP should initially contact the air ambulance service that is based closest to the scene. (should be which ever can get there most quickly-remember the golden hour doesn't start when we get on scene)

Though an issue in itself, there still should be no bias as far as calling the closest service. Exactly. Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing that says the PSAP has to use a specific service as a one-call system. If the dispatcher knows which service is closest or knows that the closest isn't available, the appropriate service can be contacted direct. It's logical, and it saves time.

life flight 3 & 4, out of sight and out of mind. That's probably one of the major reasons why their not used that often, I would hope that people arnt being bias to one particular air ambulance service just so some hospitals can get their "trauma" numbers up.
