How about this? Once the ambulance advises that they are onscene the comm center would ask them if they would like status checks. If EMS states yes they would, the comm center would do them at a preselected time (3, 5 minutes etc). Once EMS is inside they could choose to continue or discontinue status checks. That way the ones who can best determine the safety are in control of the situation.

Just thought of another item that would have to be done. In order to properly protect our EMS units we would have to get the surrounding counties onboard with it. Tioga NY and Chemung counties for GVEMS, Tioga PA and Lycoming for Western, Sullivan and Wyoming for Memorial. Also if an EMS unit does request a continuation of status checks once they are inside, the scene should not be considered a safe one and PD should be started to the scene. Oh and keep those negative karmas coming, I want to be triple digits by the end of the month!

Now my position remains, status checks after extended scene times would be helpful......not because it will prevent something bad from happening but because someone will actually know that something is wrong. Key word here is extended, not every 3-5 minutes while your trying to perform patient care. I would think 20 or 30 minutes is a good place to start, besides it wouldn't be that often a unit is on scene that long.....therefore little to no burden on the dispatchers.

I apologize. Without the use of the quote box I didn't realize you were quoting from the post above it and answering it.
