With all of the different brands of tools on the market, what brand does everyone prefer? During my travels south I've had the opportunity to work with 2 brands (Hurst and Holmatro). While Hurst has a great reputation and a long history of success they are just too d**n heavy. Holmatro on the other hand appears to be on the cutting edge of rescue tool technology (dewalt powered combi tool ;D). Much lighter and a lot more powerful compared to other tools. They are also one of the only tools to be UL certified . With all of the options that they have for tools and pumps it's no wonder why they are the number one tool manufacturer in the WORLD. So when your Hurst spreader gets stuck we'll come and cut the arms off to get it out. ;D.

Well, In Canton we have used Hurst since the beginning of time. I think they are a great tool, but If I was gonna start over and had the money we would be switching over to Halmatro in a heartbeat. They are so much lighter and faster. I have worked with them on several events and find them so much nicer.

It's all in what works for you and your service. I have had the opportunity to work with Hurst, Holmatro, Amkus and Lukas (Centaur). My opinion and this could be because my company uses this...is Lukas. I agree the Hurst is heavy. I am not a Holmatro fan at all and quite frankly you couldn't pay me to put them on my rescue....well ok maybe you could I'll do damn near anything for money. Holmatro is fast until you need to cut something and then they dog down till the second stage kicks in and it "snaps" through whatever you are cutting....at least that has been my experience.
The Lukas is fast and I have found it to have the continuos power and it doesn't "dog down" like the Holmatro. Again my belief is that it is a preference thing. No different than being a Ford or Chevy fan.

Holmatro is fast until you need to cut something and then they dog down till the second stage kicks in and it "snaps" through whatever you are cutting This dogging down is present in every tool that is connected to a 100 preconnect hose and a 2 stage pump. We just replaced a Lukas system and the same characteristics that you were talking about occured with the Lukas. I've found that if you use a shorter length hose that the pressure build up will be much faster (almost instantaneous) then that of the longer length hoses. Just a matter of some simple fluid dynamics at work (long hose takes longer to build up a pressure then a short hose will). ;D

23Truck, I understand your point however this happened to me twice and each time it was with a portable power plant and a "short" section of hose. Again I think the biggest point here is that whatever works for you is the best to use and I prefer Lukas.

I have had the oppurtunity to use Amkus, Lukas, Holmatro, Hurst, Genesis and Phoenix. Holmatro are pieces of junk, Hurst are heavy, Phoenix are incapable. Of all I prefer the Amkus. We currently run 4 preconnected Amkus tools and have 3 unconnected Amkus tools. We are in the process of placing tools on our 2nd rescue and we have decided to go with Genesis due to cutting force and pump design. The Genesis set will go on our 2nd rescue except for the cutters, they will replace our Amkus Speedway cutters on our primary rescue. I still prefer Amkus overall, but Genesis are a very close second.

We use Lukas at my department, and they are good tools except they could use more powerful cutters. Used Genesis in the class that Howell puts on in Ohio and they were fabulous. Lightweight, powerful, and easy to use.

Our depart. has just purchased holmotro CORE. we transfered our older hurst to our engine for backup/2nd calls. I have used holmotro for many years without any trouble. Our committee went to expo, brought in several units for trial, and compared specs before purchase. We are very pleased.
