Several departments are running QRS. How do you incorperate the FF/First responder duties. Example; You have a MVA with entrapment and injuries. Do your SOG's identify this and how does it work? What are the thoughts of crosstraining FF with EMS?

Crosstraining fire and EMS is a good thing, this makes every one of those people who are crosstrianed twice as valuable as people who are not!!! Can anyone argue with that?? I think not?

NT5-----
As far as running MVA's with injuries and such. Canton Fire Department which performs QRS performs things as follows: Primary Duties are the same--We are contracted for FIRE AND RESCUE coverage, our first responsibility is to rescue people from harm and then to assist with Pt. care. Most generally there is enough people to perform both functions as well.
IF your WORKING relationship is good with the other crews (EMS) that you work with, then it works very well. With Canton Fire and Western Alliance we know who is to do what, EMS performs PT care and Fire Performs extrication duties and stays out of our way. EMS is allowed 1 person in the vehicle while extrication is in motion. But, WE TRAIN SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR TOGETHER TO KEEP THIS UP, it doe snot come easy or overnight.
We have a couple people that have a hard time seperating their jobs but that is the same with everything we do.

hey guys I often get asked how do you know who to go with being that I run with Ridgebury EMS and also the other side of the parking lot, Ridgebury fire rescue. The way I see it I have some pretty decent traing I utilize that training where I feel it is most needed. ie... MVA entrapment no matter what time of day I did not take DOH BVR to stand around and wait for the patient read my profile im only here to break shit and jump outa shit. I am interior firefighter befor I am an EMT. For me the decision is easy. The hard part comes at the end staying with the dept you came with. For insurance reasons I can understand but its tough to say ok the car is opened the patient is out lets hop in the back of the rig and go to work. Whatever it takes to get the job done. Be safe out there.... dont forget about FF1 test and the National Rescue Cert coming up

The way I look at it is this, MY primary duties are are to put out the fire and rescue human life, now after that has been done, if the person I or another FF has rescued needs medical help I will also do that until such time that an EMS crew can take over . I joined and train to help PEOPLE!! in their time of need, but that is my opinion.

Ya know the other issue that we have here in Ridgebury. well we have several but on the topic.... We being fire and rescue have invited our local EMS agency to several trainings they never show up. I also run with the ambulance I have stated to them that maybe if they want to be involved in lets say an MVA scene other than waiting for the patient than maybe they should buy a couple of extrication suits or something other than jeans and t shirts and show up to a dispatched call ready to work. I love EMS and I love rescue sometimes i feel like im in the middle here in Ridgebury but man can I understand the Fire sides point of view. there has got to be some willingness to train not just a bunch of pissing and moaning about how come this and that. Its all about life presevation in the end . Lets get the job done . Thats what think!!! stay safe...

Kim good point.. Just wish everyone out there would realize what we do...I know I would like to do more but working out of state doesnt allow it.. If guys with the available time would cross train or be like some people and have all the time to do both our lives would be simpler.. but hey thats a perfect world and you know THIS ISNT A PERFECT WORLD>> EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.. anyways everyone take the trainign when it is available and help your dept when you can.. It may not seem as much but every little bit you do helps weather the EMS units agree or disagree
