I heard some RUMOR that some other departments in the county are looking into doing rescue for themselves, was just wondering if anyone knew if this is true, who it is and what reasons they have.

I have information from a Athens Township officer that they will be purchasing a small hydraulic unit to supliment the current rescue in the Valley. He told me that they felt it was needed because "what if" situations when there may not be a rescue available in the valley and to use for forcable enrty on other calls.

I think that just adding a hydraulic tool to a piece does not make a rescue. Maybe an extrication unit, but by no means a true rescue.
Personally I think it is a great idea. Towanda, as an example, added a combo tool to their new La France. It was meant to initiate an extrication and support the rescue upon arrival.
Did this mean that Towanda is now a rescue company, No. It means they are supporting the operations of their assigned rescue company and looking at the end results of those that may need the service of the tool.
I believe that we as a county have strategically located "true" rescue companies (or heavy rescues). With this being a specialized service, any support that can be offered should not be questioned or denied. However to simply put a tool, especially a combo, on a rig and call it a rescue is absurd.
Just my thoughts and ramblings!
May your boom always be vertical!

Just to clarify, IF they were to add these type of tools. Twp. already has a fairly complete hand tool arsenal and a fair amount of cribbing, I have seen less on actual so called "rescues" in the area. It would be nice to see some other services offered by local fire departments as a sort of "specialty", or something they take pride in always doing and doing it well. Everyone in the area does "engine" work well, but nobody really does PRIMARY truck work initially. This usually comes as an after thought and happens mostly after the fire has been knocked. When was the last time a primary search or ventilation was taking place before the hose team was actually at the seat of the fire?? Yes we do not live in the urban world, but with the amount of departments in such close proximety to each other we could have an efficient and effective system that is even better than the GOOD one that is in place currently. 5 departments and a rescue company within 3 miles radius, what could be done to BETTER serve the community as a whole, how many things can we think of? [glow=red,2,300]Think about it!![/glow] ;D

It seems as if we've had a good number of EMT, FR, and Essentials classes lately, but not much (or nothing?) in the way of BVR. I know a lot of people who are interested, so it would be nice to see all three parts held in the area.

The arsenal of hand tools that athens township purchased was primarily for the purpose of fireground operations. They work quite well for that. Can they be used for vehicle rescue? Sure they can. But, that's not what they were purchased for. Twp is looking into small rescue tools, but I will again state that they will only be for a supplemental system. You just never know when you might need them. Believe me when I say that dept 24 is not looking to take over their own rescue. That is not the intent. The membership of dept. 24 agrees that gvems has one of the best rescue systems in the area. Why would we not want them at our call?

I think the BVR idea is a good one, chief, and the first-aid/CPR classes I'm hearing about as well. I understand that we're not entertaining the thought at Dept. 22 of becoming a full-blown rescue company, but I do, however think that any training that permits us to save more lives and property is good training. Even though I'm not, nor will I ever be, a "firefighter" in the truest sense of the word, I'm up for any training that allows me to broaden my horizons as a public servant. The aforementioned trainings offer that opportunity.

1 tool does not a rescue make. What is considered a 'rescue company' in your county and who are they?
