2/28/03 at 0541 Dept. 9 Ridgebury was dispatched to a chimney/structure fire on the Stringham Road. Per our box alarm Dept. 3 Smithfield and Dept. 19 Wellsburg were also dispatched. Ridgbury 5 arrived on scene to find heavy fire on outside of structure at the rear, Ridgebury 2 requested a 2nd alarm for tankers.
Once on scene Ridgebury 2 assumed command, the fire had extended into the living area, with the majority of the fire on the exterior of the house. Dept. 19 was directed to a dry hydrant about 1 mile from the scene, Dept. 3 continued with an Engine and crew for RIT.
Once 9 Engine 1 arrived on the scene the fire was rapidly extinguished using less than 500 gallons of water. Light smoke and heat damage to the house with moderate damage to the structure around the chimney and roof.
Command transferred to Ridgebury 3 at 0630, as I had to go to work. Dept. 9 returned to quarters at about 0730.

A perfect example of why we in the rural areas SHOULD box a "run of the mill chimney fire". Good Job Guys!

Just a little note....
The caller was a s calm as could be, and never once made anything sound like it was burning in anyplace but the chimney. He started calmly "I think I have a chimney fire"

He was right Kim, he had a chimney fire and then some!! I don't think he'd gone outside yet and knew what was happening, and thanks for the wake up call!
