Why is the Bradford County Fire Chiefs Association trying to develop their own Fire Investigation team. I believe that yes the chief is responsible for determing or trying to determine the cause of the fire however the fire marshalls are experts in this catagory. Who is going to cover the insurance, how are these people going to become experts in the field, and how is this system going to work when the case goes infront to the court system. I personally believe we are truly "playing with fire on this issue."

One of the reasons that we are looking to do it is because it is getting harder and harder to get a firemarshall. This may help them out by reducing the number of calls they respond to that are not arson. There are times when you get a couple heads together that we can determine a cause. I would think this will or could be a great asset to the state police. When I have a fire I ALWAYS try to get another Chief to help be just to get another opinion.
I know in my department my insurance will cover me as it is considered mutual aid to another department. I woudl think that any fire departments insurance would cover them especially if they are the "deputy fire marshall" as appointed by the state police. Maybe Trooper McKee fill us in a little better than that.

This team is then being designed as an arm of the State Police Fire Marshall as it sounds then. The reason I bring up some of these questions is a result of the Tioga County, NY team which has always done an excellent job. Some of the issues I have seen and heard are as follows: 1) Only fire chiefs or past chiefs are allowed to serve (severly limits possible / available personnel), granted you also do not want every idiot in the county on this team 2) Amount of time spent by the team investigating fires, research, educational activities, etc. 3) Fire Marshall will still need involvement as they have the power of arrest 4) Abilities to be reconized in the county as a legitimate ageny and having control to determine cause and orgin of fire. 5) Vast area of county to be covered (works in Tioga NY however Bradford is 2-3 x's larger geographically)
Thanks for the input into this matter
