Well, I haven't posted in a while - time to stir things up
THE FOOT is going down. I am going to send a letter to EVERY fire chief late this week or early next week, stating what OUR policy will be as it relates to "cars".
Since Bradford County holds the license, EVERY person who keys up and talks on Fire repeater or to US on ANY fire frequency does so with our permission, not just "because" they are a fire department.
It is NOT going to be a heavy-handed letter, but it IS going to say that, unless you are a designated line officer or apparatus, as defined by long-standing SOPs agreed upon BY the Fire Chief's Association, you will NOT be acknowledged. The ONLY exceptions will be:
1) Emergency traffic. This can be coming across something of an emergent, LIFE-THREATENING nature or observation of something on-scene that is life threatening. It is NOT to call Red Cross, that "X car 2" is on scene (after others are on scene), that the road is slippery (DUH! Its WINTER TIME! How did YOU determine it was slippery?), etc.
2) If a "car" is the FIRST unit on scene and gives a scene report, we will echo the scene report.
We will NOT take ORDERS from a car unless they establish themselves as "Incident Command" (yes, I know its implied if they are the first one there, but they need to SAY it.) And we will not echo any car responding, on scene (once officers or other units are on scene) or once apparatus is on scene.
If you have ANY objections or other thoughts, NOW is the time to air them, before I send the letter. It WILL be enforced. I agree that SO MUCH radio traffic has become TERRIBLY unnecessary
EMS folks------your letter is not far behind... (I don't CARE if 9A1 or 21A1 is standing by awaiting crew or that X unit 238 is on scene! )
