TOWANDA - The Bradford County Commissioners have hired Acting 911 Coordinator Kim Jennings as the new 911 coordinator, replacing Karen Niemeyer who resigned from the position in September.
The appointment was made during the commissioner's regular meeting Thursday.
Jennings was hired following an executive session held by the commissioners the day before, said Commissioner Chairwoman Nancy Schrader.
Jennings has worked as a dispatcher for the last seven years and with Niemeyer as the assistant 911 coordinator for the last two years, he said Thursday.
Jennings, a resident of Canton, also serves as the fire chief of the Canton Volunteer Fire Department.
“(Karen) kept me very up to date with everything she did,” Jennings said, adding that he is very familiar with the work required to operate the 911 center and the work already done - and still to be done - on the county's 911 readdressing project.
There is much more to the 911 coordinating job than readdressing, but the readdressing project is one of the main priorities at this time, said Jennings.
“Besides readdressing there are other duties, but (readdressing) is my number one challenge right now,” he said. “I hope to get that back on course. The next thing is probably working to keep our communication up to date, raising the standards.”
Several upgrades have already been made at the county's 911 center, including the new equipment that will coordinate with the new addresses, but there are other upgrades that need to be made and will be, he added.
The task of readdressing has been especially challenging in the Valley where council members in Sayre, Athens Borough and South Waverly have questioned the necessity of the address changes. Sayre Borough has already withdrawn from participating in the readdressing project and Athens Borough is in the process of doing the same.
Jennings said his door is always open and he is willing to speak to anyone about their concerns, whether related to readdressing or otherwise.
“Our number is 265-9101 and if there are any question or comments, I'm always willing to hear from people to make it (our service) more efficient for people,” he said.

Congrats to Kim now that its official. I am glad to see that he finally gets the chance to be the captian of the ship.
