KME is building a new rescue pumper for the Chemung Fire Department. It will be a custom chassis that seats eight, with 1250 g.p.m. pump, and mounted in the rear on the passenger side with 1000 gallons of water. The truck will be equipped with Genesis Hydraulic Rescue tools and bunch of new equipment. The truck will be at the PA Expo and New York State Fire Chief Show.

KME?(Keep Mechanics Employed) ;D I am not trying to stir anything up but did you look at other maufacturers? I am sure that you could get the same specs from somewhere else. Anything but KME. Just a question. I know that they come in low bidder all the time but ya do get what ya paid for.

I know that the fire truck committee and board of commissioner did some researching and found that the factory is not that far way "if needed" to be sent back to be fixed. So what is wrong with KME? I know a couple fire departments that have KME and didn't have any major problems with them. I know that your not going to buy a fire truck that doesn't need to be fixed.

That’s very true about all apparatus. Nothing is built perfectly. I have heard of a few company’s that have them in the area that I live in ( Cumberland co. and Dauphin co.) that have KME and have had nothing but problems with them since the day they took delivery. I am sure you will like it though. I guess whats good for one company isn't always good for another.
Be safe.

To add to what EngTrk said about KME.... I know of several departments who have purchased KME's only to find them being constructed poorly. I know of a department that had to send their rescue back within a year of construction because about 2 feet of weld on the cab broke. Come on now, is that supposed to happen? I can also tell you some horror stories that I have heard about the city of Harrisburg and their two new KME ladder towers. The list could continue. Valley 8 you spoke of the KME plant being close so that if something happens you could send it back, I know of a builder that builds one of the best, if not the best, rescue type rigs available that is even closer (Tully, NY) to Chemung. But I guess if all that people look at is the dollar signs then they deserve what they are getting.

Down here in Maryland KME is known by the same name (Keep Mechanics Employed). It's not known that way nationally just for no reason. We in the DOD fire service have grown to hate KME. If you asked some guys in Sayre and they answered you truthfully, I think you find the same from them. I know you in New York have your hands tied and the town fathers have a lot of say on the money side, but cheaper isn't always best. As far as the distance to the factory, there are other manufactures that have authorized repair shops close to home also that can do all the repairs needed (short of having to have the truck rebuilt due to a major accident). I wish you guys in Chemung the best and hope this turns out to be a good truck for you.

We did research most of the manufacturers only to have our local Pierce dealer tell us we wanted to build a truck we couldn't afford, Saulsbury refused to return our calls (Must be they don't need the bussiness), and E-one was represented by the same dealer that sells Saulsbury, The Folks at Lafrance equipment in Elmira were more than accomodating and the tours given at the factory for KME more than impressive, I have heard just as much good about KME as I have bad and most of the bad comes from people who say "I know of a department who dosen't like their KME" and that is probably from one or two opinionated individuals who pushed for a different brand at the time of purchase, it goes bact to the old Ford Vs. Chevy rivalry, We all know that Ford is better than Chevy BUT I know of a Guy who likes Chevy better because the last Ford he had ended up with a dead battery.....
