Pennsylvania DCNR has an agreement with the US Forest Service to assist with the suppression of wildfires nationally. Last year PA assigned 8 or 9 (I think) 20 person hand crews and multiple single resources. All in all PA probably assigned approx. 200 +/- people at the national level.
The experience and training gained from these assignments is tremendous. It's also kind of amazing to travel from PA to a western state and then see somebody that you know or have worked with before.
Any firefighter interested in becoming involved with the specialized crew is more than welcome and should contact me with any questions. There will be a specialized crew meeting at the Tioga Forest District Office on 4/7/07 beginning at 9:00am until we complete the pact test. Below is some information regarding specialized crew.
1. Must complete minimum training - S-190 & PA-130 2. Pass a work capacity test annually - 3 mile walk w/ 45 pound pack in 45 minutes. 3. Attend DCNR hosted fire camp training every three years after the first year attended. 4. Receive annual update training refresher if bye year for fire camp. 5. Assignment is for 14 days on the line plus travel - should expect to be gone approx. 16 or 17 days. 6. Obtaining employer permission is up to employee. Letters can be written to verify employee is part of the specialized crew, explain how it works and what it's all about.
