This year, 2005, has been a tough year on the brothers in Bradford County, both Fire & EMS and the brothers in blue. The latest passing, Brother Merle Smith of North Towanda Fire and Rescue is a clear cut example. This board, and its administrators, express our condolances to Merle's family and to our brothers at NTVFR.
As a "younger yet older" member of the Bradford County Emergency Services, I am saddened every year by the passing of brothers that I looked up to and admired in all facets of our operations over the years. I can tell you that we have lost, in the last 5 years alone, significant amounts of knowledge and dedication to not only individual municipalities, but the county as a whole. The majority of those that have passed have been either peers to myself and my administrators or have been influencial to the operations as we know it today.
That being said, entering my "older and wiser" years, I do not look forward to more passings, particularly those that came into the service with me and rose the ranks. Please, each and every one of you, take the time to reflect on what and whom we have been associated with and be thankful that you and they were a part of something very special.... The protection of Bradford County and all its citizens, the comraderie of brothers and the friendships and lifelong bonds that have been developed right here in our own neck of the woods.
I respect each service in our County and have met a lot of you along the way. Many are considered by me as close friends and some I hope to get to know better.
Think about it and reflect!
Have a great month and keep up the fantastic work you all do!
